There were many articles written after Hefner died but the death of the founder of Hustler seems to not have drawn much attention. I am very interested in art history and am an amateur (very unskilled) artist myself. So I have read a bit of art history. That got more serious when my son, Thoreau Bakker, was doing his MFA at OCAD University in Toronto. His MFA thesis is on Walter Benjamin and we discussed Benjamin's famous essay on the notion of the "aura" of a work of art. I just learned that Lady Ga Ga has a huge collection of things associated with other singers. It sort of surprised me that she was so prominent at the swearing in ceremony for the new POTUS, Joe Biden. After all, she was like the next iteration of Madonna and had to outdo her in terms of erotic shock value. That reminded me of Bataille's work and Lacan's ideas about eroticism and a Neo-Freudian approach to the idea of sexual repression. (I have been reading Lacan to better comprehend Zizek!) In looking back at Rembrandt's work (after reading Schama) I realized that Rembrandt was even more transgressive than I had realized, but his small steps are not practically invisible because the things considered "bad art" in his lifetime are not considered anything other than old fashioned, conformist classical art. (He was very poor at the end due to being a bit of a rebel, which is hard for us to fully understand today.) Of course Gaughin should be mentioned as a artist who painted in a very erotic manner (by the standards of HIS day). Thank you for broadening my understanding of some aspects of this enormous topic.
